After Care

Great extensions are an investment, and like any investment worth making, they reward the people who look after them properly. Follow this guide and our Hair Island extensions will stay softer, fuller and gorgeous for longer.

Washing

Extensions don't produce natural oils the way your scalp does, which means they need a little more intentional care when it comes to washing. The basics:

  • Always brush before you wash. Wet hair is vulnerable – tackling tangles once the hair is already saturated puts unnecessary stress on the fibre and, for nano ring wearers, on the attachment points. Brush through gently from ends to roots before water touches your hair.
  • Use the Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner Duo. This is the aftercare we recommend across all Hair Island sets – it's sulfate-free, enriched with argan oil and formulated to keep extensions soft, glossy and easy to manage. For trade customers, it's also the product required to keep your 180-day warranty valid (see our Terms of Sale for full details).
  • Use a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are too harsh for extension hair. They strip moisture from the fibre, accelerate dryness and shorten the lifespan of your set considerably. A gentle, sulfate-free formula is non-negotiable.
  • Keep your head upright when washing. No flipping, no piling hair on top of your head. Work shampoo through in a downward motion – root to tip – and rinse the same way.
  • Conditioner from mid-length to ends only. For nano ring wearers, keep conditioner well away from the rings and attachment points. Buildup around the bonds can cause slippage over time.
  • Squeeze, don't wring. Once rinsed, gently squeeze excess water from the hair. Never twist or wring, as it causes tangling and puts stress on the attachment points. Pat dry with a microfibre towel and allow to air dry where possible.

Brushing

The right brush and the right technique make a bigger difference than most people realise.

  • Use a soft-bristle or loop brush specifically designed for extensions – standard brushes can catch on bonds and cause unnecessary breakage.
  • Brush at least morning and evening – more if needed.
  • Always start from the ends and work upward toward the roots, holding the hair at the mid-length as you go to reduce tension on the bonds.
  • Never brush wet hair. Allow extensions to dry fully before brushing through.
  • For nano ring wearers, support the bonds gently with your free hand as you brush near the attachment points.

Styling

Good news! Your Hair Island extensions can be straightened, curled and blow-dried just like your own hair. They're crafted from 100% Remy human hair, which means they respond to heat styling beautifully.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Heat protectant is non-negotiable. Every single time. Apply to damp hair before blow-drying, or to dry hair before any hot tool. No exceptions.
  • Keep the temperature sensible. There's no need to go above 180°C for extensions. Anything higher causes cumulative damage to the hair fibre over time.
  • For nano ring wearers: avoid direct heat on the rings themselves. Prolonged direct heat can weaken the attachment over time.
  • A lightweight hair oil or serum worked through the lengths and ends after styling keeps your extensions looking glossy and healthy between washes.

Sleeping

Friction is the enemy of great extensions and most of it happens overnight without you even realising. A few habits that make a significant difference:

  • Never go to bed with wet or damp hair. Wet hair that's slept on becomes matted – and once that sets in, it's very difficult to reverse.
  • Brush thoroughly before bed. Every night, without fail.
  • Plait or braid loosely before sleeping. A single loose plait keeps the hair contained and dramatically reduces overnight tangling.
  • Invest in a silk pillowcase. Cotton creates friction that accelerates tangling and dullness. Silk eliminates that entirely; it's one of the best things you can do for both your extensions and your natural hair.

Holidays & Swimming

Sun, sea and seriously good hair – it's the dream. Chlorine, salt water, UV rays and heat all need a little extra consideration when wearing extensions, but with the right habits in place, your hair doesn’t miss out on the fun.

  • Protect from UV. Prolonged sun exposure can dry out and fade extension hair. Wear your hair up or cover it when spending extended time in direct sunlight.
  • Keep extensions out of the water where possible. Before swimming, put your hair up securely. If it does get wet, rinse immediately with clean water and wash with a sulfate-free shampoo as soon as possible. Chlorine and salt water left in the hair causes dryness and, in lighter shades, can affect the colour over time.
  • Sun cream and hair extensions don't mix. Keep hair up and away from areas where you've applied sun cream or oils – they can discolour lighter extension hair if they come into contact.
  • Blondes, take note. If sun, chlorine or salt water have left your extensions looking a little brassy, a Malibu C treatment used occasionally can help counteract discolouration and restore the tone. Always test on a small section before applying all over.

Colouring

Honestly? It's not something we recommend – and we mean that with your best interests at heart. Extensions have already undergone processing during manufacturing, which makes them more porous and less predictable than virgin hair. The results can be uneven, the colour harder to control, and the lifespan of your set significantly shortened as a result. Our advice is to find your match before you buy; our stylists are here to help you do exactly that.

That said, we understand that sometimes a colour adjustment feels necessary, and if you do choose to go ahead, please be aware that any colouring is carried out entirely at your own risk. Hair Island cannot be held responsible for any damage, change in texture or shortened lifespan resulting from colouring your extensions after purchase.

If you're set on it, please ensure it's carried out by a professional with experience working with extension hair specifically, never attempt it at home, and always do a strand test first. Going darker is significantly safer than going lighter – attempting to bleach or lift extension hair is strongly inadvisable under any circumstances.

If you're unsure about your shade before purchasing, please get in touch with our team first. We'd much rather help you get it right from the start.

Maintenance (Nano rings)

Nano ring extensions require regular maintenance appointments to keep them sitting correctly and safely as your natural hair grows. As a general guide, move-up appointments are needed every 8 to 12 weeks – leaving it longer puts increasing tension on your natural hair as the rings move down the shaft.

With regular maintenance and proper aftercare, the same hair can often be reused for 6 to 12 months. Look after them and they'll go the distance.

Remember

Extensions that are cared for properly look better, last longer, and justify every penny of the investment. A little effort upfront means effortless hair every single day – and that's always been the goal. This guide covers everything you need – follow it, and your Hair Island extensions will reward you for it.
