Color & Product Disclaimer
Every shade, swatch and strand — shown to you as honestly as we can
Human hair is a natural material, and screens are imperfect windows. Before you order nano ring or clip-in extensions, or any of our aftercare products, this page explains exactly how colour and appearance can vary between what you see online and what arrives at your door — and what we do to close that gap.
Colour is the single biggest reason a hair extension order goes wrong — so we're addressing it directly
Hair Island sells nano ring extensions, clip-in extensions, and a range of accessories and aftercare products including extension brushes, sulfate-free shampoos, conditioners and storage solutions, all shipped to customers across the UK. Every product photograph, shade name and colour swatch on hairisland.co.uk is produced in good faith to represent our range as accurately as possible. This page sets out, honestly and without exception, the factors that can still cause what arrives to look subtly different from what you saw on screen, and what we do — before and after your order — to keep that difference as small as it can be.
Why the same shade can look slightly different from one screen to the next
Every phone, laptop and monitor renders colour a little differently. Brightness settings, screen technology, ambient light in the room you're sitting in, and even the graphics card driving the display all shift how a shade of brown, blonde or balayage appears on-screen. This is a known limitation of digital retail, not something specific to Hair Island, and it applies to every online hair extension retailer.
What can shift the shade you see
Screen calibration, resolution and colour profile (sRGB vs wider gamuts), device brightness, blue-light filters, the lighting used in the original product photography, and the file compression used to load images quickly all play a part. Two customers viewing the exact same product photo on two different devices can genuinely see two slightly different shades.
What this means for your order
Our shade photography is taken and edited to represent each colour as truthfully as we can achieve, using consistent lighting across our range wherever possible. However, we cannot guarantee that the shade rendered on your particular screen will be pixel-for-pixel identical to the extensions that arrive. Please treat our product photos as a close and honest guide rather than an exact colour proof, and see our Shades guide alongside your own hair for the clearest comparison.
Human hair is not manufactured to a fixed formula — and that's exactly why it looks so real
Our clip-in and nano ring extensions are made from 100% double-drawn Remy human hair, selected in batches for consistent thickness and natural movement. Because this is a natural material sourced from real donors rather than a synthetic fibre produced from a single dye lot, there will always be a small amount of tone, texture and shade variation from one manufacturing batch to the next — and, occasionally, between different lengths within the same shade.
What can vary, batch to batch
Depth and warmth of tone, the visibility of any root shadow or balayage effect, the exact ratio of any highlighted strands, and minor differences in shine or texture depending on the specific donor hair used in that production run. This is entirely normal for genuine Remy human hair and is not a fault or a manufacturing defect.
What stays consistent
The double-drawn construction, the weight distribution designed to sit through the mid-lengths and ends rather than bunching at the root, the cuticle alignment that keeps the hair tangle-resistant, and the overall shade family you ordered. Variation is a matter of subtle tone, never of the wrong colour family being sent.
If you're topping up an existing set
If you already own Hair Island extensions and are ordering more of the same shade to add length or thickness, please be aware that a small tonal difference between your original set and a new batch is possible, even when the shade name and code are identical. If matching an existing set precisely is important to you, we strongly recommend using our colour-match service below, or contacting us with a photo of your current extensions before you order, so our stylists can advise on the closest available batch.
Our free colour-match service — the closest thing to trying it on in person
Because screens vary and natural hair varies, we strongly recommend using our free Colour Match service before placing a full order, especially if you're choosing between two close shades or matching to your own natural colour for the first time.
Send us three photos of your natural hair
A front, back and side view, taken in natural daylight without filters or flash, showing the full length of your hair and any highlights, balayage or grown-out colour. The better the photos, the more accurate the recommendation.
One of our in-house stylists assesses your colour
A qualified stylist reviews the depth, tone and any variation through your lengths and identifies the closest shade to your hair from the current Hair Island range.
You receive your personalised match within 2–3 working days
We'll email you a shade recommendation. This is a professional guide based on photographs, not a laboratory colour measurement, so a small margin of difference can still exist once your extensions arrive — for the reasons explained throughout this page.
Please read this before relying on any colour match
Our colour-match service is provided as a genuine guide by trained stylists and is not a guarantee of an exact or scientific colour match. It remains subject to the same screen-display and natural-batch factors described above. Full terms governing the service are set out in our Terms & Conditions. If your extensions arrive and the shade doesn't look right once you've had a chance to view it in natural light, please contact us — we will always do our best to help you find the right shade.
Dyed or processed hair behaves differently — please read this before reaching for a home colour kit
All Hair Island extensions have already been through a manufacturing process before they reach you, which makes the hair more porous and less predictable than hair that has never been treated. Applying home colour, bleach or toner on top of this can produce uneven, unpredictable results and can shorten the working life of your set considerably.
Our honest recommendation
If a colour adjustment feels necessary, going slightly darker carries far less risk than attempting to lift or bleach the hair lighter, which we strongly advise against under any circumstances.
If you do choose to go ahead
Please ensure any colouring is carried out by a professional stylist experienced with pre-processed extension hair, never attempted at home, and always preceded by a strand test on a small, hidden section first.
Hair Island cannot be held responsible for any damage, colour result, change in texture, or shortened lifespan that results from colouring, bleaching or otherwise chemically treating your extensions after delivery. This does not affect your separate legal rights if the hair was faulty, damaged or not as described when it arrived — see the Consumer Rights Act 2015 panel further down this page.
Please speak to a professional stylist before cutting or dyeing your extensions
Cutting or colouring extensions is a one-way decision — hair that has been trimmed, lifted or chemically treated cannot be returned to its original state. Nano ring attachment points also need to be handled carefully around any cutting or heat-based colour correction, so both should always be carried out, or at least assessed, by someone qualified to work with extension hair specifically.
A few things worth asking your stylist
Cutting: ask them to cut dry, in small sections, and to work around nano ring attachment points rather than through them.
Colouring: ask for a strand test first, confirm they've worked with pre-processed Remy hair before, and avoid any lightening service entirely if possible.
Accurate imagery, honest descriptions, no exceptions
Beyond the natural factors already described, we hold ourselves to a straightforward standard for every product listing on hairisland.co.uk, whether it's a set of nano ring extensions, a clip-in set, an extension brush, a bottle of sulfate-free shampoo or conditioner, or a storage case.
Photography reflects real product
Product photos show the actual item for sale, unedited beyond standard exposure and colour balancing for consistency across our catalogue. We do not digitally alter a shade to look different from the physical product, and any images showing extensions styled, curled or straightened are clearly a demonstration of styling versatility rather than the "as delivered" condition.
Descriptions match what you'll receive
Titles, materials, weights and shade names are written to match the item you'll actually receive. Where a listing groups multiple shades or lengths under one product, every available option is described and priced individually before you add it to your basket, with nothing hidden or bundled without your knowledge.
Clear pricing, honest availability
Prices shown at checkout reflect exactly what you'll be charged, in the currency displayed, with any discount calculated from a genuine prior selling price. We keep stock levels and shade availability updated on each product page so you're not ordering something we can't fulfil at the shade or length shown.
Trust marks and warranty claims
We only state a claim, guarantee or warranty period — such as the trade warranty referenced in our Terms & Conditions — where it genuinely applies and under the conditions set out for it. We do not display certification marks, awards or endorsements we haven't actually been granted, and if a claim depends on a condition (for example, using a specific recommended shampoo to keep a warranty valid), that condition is stated plainly alongside it rather than left for you to discover later.
The UK law behind this disclaimer
This Colour & Product Disclaimer is written to work alongside, not instead of, your full legal rights as a UK consumer. It is designed in line with the following UK legislation and honest-advertising standards.
What governs how we describe and sell colour-based products in the UK
- Consumer Rights Act 2015
- Requires goods to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Natural shade and batch variation, disclosed clearly on this page, is not treated by us as grounds to depart from this standard — but a genuinely faulty, damaged or misdescribed item remains fully covered.
- Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008
- Prohibits misleading actions and omissions in how products are advertised. This page exists specifically so that known limitations — screen variation, natural batch variation, and the effects of dyeing processed hair — are disclosed rather than omitted.
- Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024
- Reinforces fair-trading standards for UK online retailers, including honest presentation of pricing, discounts, reviews and product claims, and prohibits fake or misleading urgency and scarcity tactics.
- Provision of Services Regulations 2009
- Requires us to make clear, accurate business and contact information available to you, which is why our company details and support contacts appear in full at the bottom of this page.
- General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (as updated)
- Covers the physical safety of the accessories we sell, such as extension brushes and storage cases, and the cosmetic products in our aftercare range, alongside the separate cosmetics labelling requirements that apply to shampoos and conditioners.
- Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013
- Governs your separate statutory right to cancel a distance-sale order, including the hygiene exemptions that apply to certain aftercare products. Full details are in our Refund Policy.
If you're ever unhappy with how a product has been described or represented to you, you can raise it with Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, or seek independent advice from citizensadvice.org.uk.
A few specific scenarios, answered
Will my extensions look exactly like the photo on my screen?
We photograph and edit our shades to represent them as truthfully as possible, but screen technology and natural hair variation mean a small difference is always possible. Treat product photos as a close, honest guide rather than an exact colour proof, and use our free colour-match service if precision matters to you.
My colour-match recommendation doesn't look quite right once it arrived — what now?
Please contact us with a photo taken in natural daylight. Our stylists will look again and help you find a closer shade, or talk you through your options under our Refund Policy if the item is still in a returnable condition.
Can I dye or bleach my Hair Island extensions?
We don't recommend it, as the hair is already processed and more porous than virgin hair. If you go ahead, please use a professional experienced with extension hair, always strand-test first, and avoid lightening or bleaching. Any colouring is carried out entirely at your own risk.
I'm topping up an older set — why doesn't the new hair match perfectly?
Even the same shade code can vary slightly between manufacturing batches, since our hair is a natural product rather than a synthetic fibre. Send us a photo of your existing extensions before ordering a top-up and our stylists will recommend the closest available batch.
Does this disclaimer apply to brushes, shampoo and storage cases too?
The screen-display point applies to any product photo. Natural batch variation and colouring risk relate specifically to human hair extensions, not to brushes, storage cases, shampoo or conditioner, which are manufactured to a fixed formula and are covered instead by the ingredient and safety information on their own product pages.
