Hygiene Policy
Why some of our products can't be returned once opened
Nano ring hair extensions, clip-in wefts, sulphate-free shampoo, conditioner and extension brushes all come into direct contact with your scalp, natural hair or skin. For that reason, several items in our range are sealed for health and hygiene purposes and cannot be accepted back once that seal is broken. This page sets out exactly which products this affects, why, and what it means for your right to cancel or return an order.
Some products touch your scalp and hair — that changes the rules
Nano ring extensions are fitted strand by strand against the scalp, our clip-in wefts sit directly against natural hair, and our sulphate-free shampoo, conditioner and extension brushes are all designed to be used on the head. Because of this direct, intimate contact, these items fall within the health and hygiene exemption that UK consumer law allows retailers to apply once protective packaging has been opened or a product has been used. This isn't a way of avoiding genuine returns — it's a health and safety standard we apply consistently, for every customer, to make sure that anything you receive from Hair Island is exactly as new as it was when it left our supplier.
Protecting every customer, not just you
Once a hygiene seal is broken, a bottle is opened, or a brush has touched hair or skin, we cannot verify that the item is unused and safe to resell to someone else. Refusing to resell opened hygiene items protects the next customer who receives that product, and it protects you too — you can always be confident that anything shipped from hairisland.co.uk has never been touched by anyone else.
A recognised legal exemption, not a store rule we invented
This approach is expressly permitted under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, which allow retailers to withhold the statutory right to cancel for goods that are sealed for health protection or hygiene purposes once those goods are unsealed after delivery. We explain exactly how this applies to each of our product categories below.
How the hygiene exemption applies across our range
Not every product we sell is hygiene-sealed, and the rule works differently depending on what you've ordered. Here's exactly where you stand for each category on hairisland.co.uk.
Nano Ring Hair Extensions
Because nano ring extensions are fitted individually against the scalp using silicone-lined rings, each pack is sealed at source. You're welcome to check the length and colour against your order the same way you might in a shop, but the seal must not be broken and the hair must not be worn, brushed, cut, coloured or washed if you want to remain eligible to cancel or return the item.
Clip-In Hair Extensions
Our double-drawn clip-in wefts sit directly against your natural hair and scalp once clipped in. Provided the hygiene seal is intact and the weft hasn't been worn, brushed, cut, coloured or washed, your statutory right to cancel and our own returns policy both apply in full.
Sulphate-Free Shampoo & Conditioner
Shampoo and conditioner are cosmetic products applied directly to the hair and scalp, and are sealed by the manufacturer for hygiene reasons. To qualify for a return, the bottle must still carry its original factory seal, unbroken and unpierced. Once that seal is removed, we're unable to accept the item back for hygiene reasons, regardless of how much product remains inside.
Extension Brushes & Combs
Loop brushes and soft-bristle extension brushes come into direct contact with hair and scalp the moment they're used. For the same reason a used hairbrush can't be resold in a shop, we cannot accept brushes or combs back once they've touched hair, even briefly, on health and safety grounds.
Storage Solutions & Other Accessories
Items that don't come into direct contact with hair or scalp — such as storage cases, colour rings and sectioning tools — are not subject to the hygiene exemption. These remain eligible for the full 14-day statutory cancellation right and our own returns policy, provided they're returned unused and, wherever possible, in their original packaging.
What to check before you open, wear or use anything
You have 14 days to decide whether you want to keep your order, and you're entitled to examine what's arrived the way you would in a shop. To keep that option open, please avoid the following until you're certain you'd like to keep the item.
Keep the hygiene tag attached
Every hygiene-sealed product leaves our warehouse with its seal or tag in place. If you decide to return an eligible item, please send it back with that seal and tag still attached — a returned item missing its hygiene seal will be treated as used and may not qualify for a refund.
This policy works alongside our Cancellation & Refund Policies
This Hygiene Policy explains one specific limit on your right to cancel or return an order: the point at which a product's hygiene seal is broken or the item has been used. It doesn't remove or reduce any of your other rights — it simply narrows what's eligible once a hygiene-sealed item has been opened. For the full picture of how cancellation and returns work at Hair Island, please read our Refund Policy alongside this page.
Three questions, in order
1. Is it within 14 days? If not, our 30-day goodwill returns window may still apply — see our Refund Policy.
2. Is it a hygiene-sealed product? If not, the standard cancellation and returns process applies.
3. Is the seal still intact and unused? If yes, you're covered. If the seal is broken or the item has been used, the hygiene exemption applies.
Faulty, damaged or wrongly described items are always covered
The hygiene exemption applies to change-of-mind returns — it never applies if a product is faulty, damaged on arrival, or doesn't match its description, even if the hygiene seal has already been broken or the item has been used. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and these rights are completely unaffected by any hygiene seal. If your extensions, shampoo, conditioner or brush arrive defective, please contact us within 30 days of delivery and we'll arrange an inspection, repair, replacement or refund as appropriate.
The UK law behind this policy
This Hygiene Policy is written to comply with the following UK legislation and regulatory standards that apply to how we sell, describe and package our products.
What governs the hygiene exemption at Hair Island
- Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013
- Permits retailers to withhold the statutory right to cancel for goods sealed for health protection or hygiene purposes once unsealed after delivery — the core basis for this policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015
- Guarantees that goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described — rights that remain in force regardless of any hygiene seal being broken.
- General Product Safety Regulations 2005
- Requires products placed on the market, including cosmetic aftercare items, to be safe for consumers under normal or reasonably foreseeable use.
- Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013
- Governs the safety, labelling and sale of cosmetic products such as our sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.
- Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008
- Requires that our hygiene exemption is explained clearly and honestly, with no misleading or ambiguous claims about your rights.
- Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024
- Reinforces fair-trading standards for UK online retailers, including honest presentation of cancellation, return and hygiene terms.
If you're ever unhappy with how a hygiene-related return has been handled, you can raise it with Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, or seek independent advice from citizensadvice.org.uk.
A few specific scenarios, answered
Can I open the outer box just to check the shade?
Yes. You can open the outer shipping box and check the colour against your Colour-Match confirmation, the same way you'd examine an item in a shop before buying. This is different from breaking the hygiene seal on the hair itself, opening a shampoo bottle, or fitting the extensions, all of which end your right to return that item.
The hygiene seal arrived already broken — is that my fault?
No. If a hygiene seal is missing, broken, or the packaging is damaged on arrival, that's a quality issue rather than a change-of-mind return, and your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply in full. Please email us at hello@hairisland.co.uk with a photo as soon as you notice, and we'll sort it out.
Can I exchange for a different shade before opening the seal?
Yes. Provided the hygiene seal is intact and the item hasn't been worn, brushed, cut, coloured or washed, you can request an exchange for a different shade or length in exactly the same way as a standard return. Contact us and we'll arrange it.
I ordered extensions and shampoo together — do I have to keep both?
No. Each item in your order is assessed separately. If the shampoo bottle is still factory-sealed but you've opened the extensions, you can still return the shampoo on its own, and vice versa, as long as each item meets its own hygiene requirements described above.
What if I only used the brush once, just to test it?
Even brief use on hair means we're unable to accept a brush or comb back for hygiene and safety reasons, regardless of how lightly it was used. If the brush arrived faulty or damaged, that's treated differently — please contact us and we'll help.
